Parent Curriculum Guide
October 2011
1st Grade
Dear Parents,
We are excited about what we have planned for your child. We hope you find this curriculum guide helpful! It is designed to give you an overview of what your child will be learning this month. We welcome your feedback as you use the Parent Curriculum Guide throughout the year.
This month in reading: This month, readers will turn their attention to the challenge of working on hard words and tricky parts of books. In this unit, students will be provided an opportunity to revisit the strategies they learned last year such as, using background knowledge, problem solve words and using more than one source of information or strategy by cross checking when we read.
Reading at home: Reading with your child is a sure way to get your child interested in reading! You can try discussing the book and practicing strategies such as talking about the book before you begin reading. Talk about what characters are in the book and what the book might be about. Discuss what is happening during the story and what might happen next. Finally, ask your child what they liked about the book.
This month in writing: Students will be writing for readers. In this unit, students will learn how to use the resources in the classroom to build a repertoire for spelling tricky words. They will be able to listen for sounds and record the letter they hear when they sound out words. They will also work on rereading their work, specifically rereading a word when you write it, reread after your write a word, and reread parts of sentences as you add more words and whole sentences when they are finished.
Writing at home: You can help your child at home by talking with them about a particular time that you did something together. You and your child can plan the story together discussing what happened first, next, then and last. You can help your child sound out words and sketch their pictures to tell their story.
This month in math: This month in math, the students will be working on counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. They will be working on writing whole numbers, know easy addition facts, use a number grid to solve addition and subtraction problems, solve number stories and use tally charts to answer questions. They will also learn to calculate and compare the value of coin collections, know and compare values of pennies and nickels as well as show and tell time to the nearest hour.
