Parent Curriculum Guide
October 2011
3rd Grade
Dear Parents,
We are excited about what we have planned for your child. We hope you find this curriculum guide helpful! It is designed to give you an overview of what your child will be learning this month. We welcome your feedback as you use the Parent Curriculum Guide throughout the year.
This month in reading: This month in reading emphasis will be placed on identifying with the characters, seeing and sensing situations from inside the characters minds. Students will begin to notice characters’ personality quirks and habits, what characters like and dislike, do with confidence, fear, and especially what they yearn for. This unit is designed to strengthen the connection between readers and characters in the books they read.
Reading at home: You can help your child by sitting with them to read. You can help them become word problem solvers and understand words that they can read but don’t know the meaning of. You can figure out words from the context.
This month in writing: This month students will be working on “Raising the quality of narrative writing.” They will work on thinking about a person or a place or a thing that is important to us, jot that person, place or thing down, and then they brainstorm small moments they spent with that person, place or thing. In thus unit they will be more sequenced, detailed, and bring more meaning into their writing.
Writing at home: At home, you can help your child with their writing by going through the writing process. You can start a personal narrative by writing a draft and revising it. You can also help your child add on to their writing as well. You may also want to take this writing and look at sentence formation, capitalization, and using proper punctuation.
This month in math: This month students will be working on adding and subtracting whole numbers and adding and subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers. The students will be working on rounding, and estimating sums and differences.
