April 2011
3rd Grade
Dear Parents,
Welcome to a new month! We are excited about what we have planned for your child. We hope you find this curriculum guide helpful! It is designed to give you an overview of what your child will be learning this month. We welcome your feedback as you use the Parent Curriculum Guide throughout the year.
This month in reading: This month students will be focusing on test preparation. Students will be reviewing reading feature articles, poems, how-to’s, all about, realistic fiction, biography, expository articles and fables and folktales.
Reading at home: You can help your child by having him or her read each and every night. Don’t just send them away to read, have them read to you and with you. This way you can monitor their success. This is also a good time to ask your child about what he or she is learning in school and any strategies they have learned to help with reading. Have your child practice these new skills while reading at home.
This month in writing: Students will be working on independent writing projects. Students will be given the opportunity to brainstorm ideas, and write a personal narrative, essay or persuasive writing.
Writing at home: Encourage your child to write at home for fun. Writing can include reading a variety of fairy tales, generate ideas and writing a new story.
This month in math: Teachers will begin the month with a strong focus on test taking skills because of the upcoming state exam. After testing, teachers will return to the units outlined in the Pearson Math curriculum. Teachers will review customary and metric measurement. Also, teachers will show students how to interpret data in order to make bar graphs and pictographs.
Math at home: You can practice measurement by using customary and metric measurement. Also, you can show your child how to interpret data in order to make bar graphs and pictographs.
