About P.S. 41
P.S. 41 Gunhill Road school is located in the North Bronx. Our school is surrounded by apartment buildings. The 2 train and 39 bus are close by. Currently we serve 890 students from grades k through 5th grade.
We have recently adopted the Teachers College Reading and Writing Program, which will provide students with a strong core set of skills and strategies for reading and writing. We will also be using the Words Their Way program, which teaches spelling skills in a meaningful and lasting way. Our reading, writing, and word study programs begin in kindergarten to lay a solid foundation for children’s continued growth in literacy and expression. As students progress through the elementary grades, these programs also reinforce and expand upon reading and writing skills, giving students the tools to interpret literature and write with sophistication and confidence as they grow.
P.S. 41’s mathematics program is designed to teach math in a fun and practical way. We know how important it is that students understand how math connects to “real life.” Through the use of traditional teaching methods, games, and activities, we help students to master basic operations as well as more difficult concepts. Teachers evaluate students’ performance often so that they know exactly which skills each child does or does not understand. In this way, students and teachers can work together to ensure that our students feel comfortable with math.
At P.S. 41, we know that it is important not to overlook Social Studies and Science. We want our students to have a deep understanding of our world and how things work. Projects and activities supplement trade books and text books to create a rich and interesting curriculum.
Because we feel that social, emotional, and personal growth are as important as academic growth, P.S. 41 uses a behavioral incentive program called “Steps 2 Success” that teaches children to be prompt, polite, positive, and prepared. We also have many after school sports and arts programs, a brand new auditorium facility, and newly remodeled gymnasium, and a beautiful library.
The staff at P.S. 41 is caring and hardworking. The teachers here provide challenging instruction in a setting designed to make students feel free to express their ideas and goals. P.S. 41’s Guidance Counselors provide a nurturing and caring environment that allows students to discuss feelings and issues in a safe space. Our academic intervention specialists instruct students with special needs in small group or one-to-one settings so that the students’ specific needs can be addressed. Finally, our staff is comprised of genuine and supportive individuals who truly care about our students.
