Parent Curriculum Guide
October 2011
Kindergarten
Dear Parents,
We are excited about what we have planned for your child. We hope you find this curriculum guide helpful! It is designed to give you an overview of what your child will be learning this month. We welcome your feedback as you use the Parent Curriculum Guide throughout the year.
This month in reading: This month’s unit will take advantage of your children’s familiarity with emergent story books that they have been reading since the beginning of the year. By providing time for your children to read, think and talk together about emergent story books, you will continue to build their knowledge of early reading skills and concepts of print. They will be able to think more deeply about story elements such as character, setting, and plot.
Reading at home: Students are encouraged to read each and every night. Make reading time special by choosing a quiet comfortable spot or making a “reading area” just for this purpose. When you are done reading together ask your child to tell you what happened in the story. This way you can check to see if they really understood what they read. This is also a good opportunity to attend to the print and figure out words and make meaning of what they read. You may also want to talk about the pictures and how they came to their conclusion about the story.
This month in writing: Teachers will be working with their students on “Approximating Small Moments.” In this unit, students will be working on writing true, sequenced stories. They will capture their thinking through drawings, labels and words. They will be working on taking care of their spellings learning how to sound out words, stretching them out so they can isolate and hear the sounds at the start, marking a mark to represent that sound. They will be able to sound out, think of the letter, and write the letter that matches the sound until they have written the entire word.
Writing at home: Have your child tell you something they did in school or at home. They can practice writing by drawing a picture of all the things they did and labeling things in their picture. For example, if they drew a picture of them playing ball at the park, they can label “b” for ball and “p” for park, also “s” for slide.
This month in math: Students will be working on comparing order numbers from 0-5.
Math at home: You can practice the concepts above by using cereal, buttons or crayons. For example, put the materials in order. Practice saying the sequence.
